Favorite Bible Verses

Imagine somebody living thousands of years ago, offering advice that could still be applied to this day, for every possible human emotion. The Bible is one of the most purchased books in all of history, translated into many languages. With our busy, modern lives, we sometimes forget that the answers to our prayers and what weighs most heavily on our hearts can be found in the Bible.

Listed below are some of our favorite Bible verses, associated with different human emotions. Enjoy them and give thanks!


Anger

My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. James 1:19, 20

Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:31, 32

Belief

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:29

Charity

“But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” Luke 14:13, 14

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.
1 Timothy 6:17, 18

Comfort

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28

Courage

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:12, 13

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:9

Death

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 23:4

“Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”
1 Corinthians 15:55

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Enemies

The Lord helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him. Psalm 37:40

“For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” Deuteronomy 20:4

His heart is secure, he will have no fear; in the end he will look in triumph on his foes. Psalm 112:8


Eternal Life

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Revelation 21:4

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Galatians 6:8

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.
John 10:27, 28

Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:54

Faith

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
Hebrews 11:1

You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:26

… the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Galatians 5:22

Fear

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Psalm 23:4, 5


Forgiveness

For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Matthew 6:14

Do not say, “I’ll pay you back for this wrong!” Wait for the Lord, and he will deliver you. Proverbs 20:22

Gossip

Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies. Psalm 34:13

Living in God’s Grace

Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. 1 Thessalonians 4:1

The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O Lord, endures forever – do not abandon the works of your hands. Psalm 138:8

Guidance

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” Isaiah 30:21

In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.
Proverbs 16:9

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you. Psalm 32:8

I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.
Isaiah 42:16

Guilt

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 2 Corinthians 5:17

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 1 John 1:7


Help in Troubles

Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up.
Psalm 71:20

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33

Holy Spirit

“But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
John 4:14

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Romans 14:17

Honesty

Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act.
Proverbs 3:27

Better a little with righteousness than much gain with injustice. Proverbs 16:8

Hope

Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God. 1 Peter 1:21

Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord. Psalm 31:24

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1 Peter 1:3

Humility

Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:4

You hear, O Lord, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry. Psalm 10:17

For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Matthew 23:12

Jealousy

For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. James 3:16

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.
Psalm 37:7

A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.
Proverbs 14:30

Joy

Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy.
1 Peter 1:8

…but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
John 16:22

Loneliness

I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. John 14:18

Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. Isaiah 58:9

Yet I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; Oh my God, do not delay. Psalm 40:17

Long Life

Show me, O Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man’s life is but a breath.
Psalm 39:4,5

The fear of the Lord adds length to life; but the years of the wicked are cut short. Proverbs 10:27

For through me your days will be many, and years will be added to your life.
Proverbs 9:11


Love of Thy Neighbor

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. All men will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.” John 13:34,35

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.
Romans 12:9, 10

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Colossians 3:12,13

God’s Love

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:10

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. 1 John 4:16

We love because he first loved us. 1 John 4:19

Loving God

I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me. Proverbs 8:17

Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him. John 14:21

Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Psalm 37:4

Lust

For everything in the world – the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does – comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. 1 John 2:16,17

Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue the righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
2 Timothy 2:22

In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires… For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. Romans 6:11, 12, 14

Lying

“Do not plot evil against your neighbor, and do not love to swear falsely. I hate all this,” declares the Lord. Zechariah 8:17

Do not testify against your neighbor without cause, or use your lips to deceive.
Proverbs 24:28

Meekness

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5

But with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth… Isaiah 11:4

For the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with salvation.
Psalm 149:4

He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. Psalm 25:9

Mercy

Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of Justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!
Isaiah 30:18

…Know this: God has even forgotten some of your sin. Job 11:6

For my own name’s sake I delay my wrath; for the sake of my praise I hold it back from you, so as not to cut you off. Isaiah 48:9

Money

Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked.
Psalm 37:16

He who mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker; whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished. Proverbs 17:5

But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today. Deuteronomy 8:18

But the needy will not always be forgotten, nor the hope of the afflicted ever perish. Psalm 9:18

Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless. Ecclesiastes 5:10

He who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth and he who gives gifts to the rich – both come to poverty. Proverbs 22:16

Obedience

Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me – put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:9

If they obey and serve him, they will spend the rest of their days in prosperity and their years in contentment. Job 36:11

For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. Romans 2:13

The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. 1 John 2:17

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 7:21

“I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.”
John 8:51

Patience

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9

But he who stands firm to the end will be saved. Matthew 24:13

We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised. Hebrews 6:12

You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. Hebrews 10:36

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4

Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.
Romans 5:3,4

Peace

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Colossians 3:15

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

Prayer

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.” Matthew 7:7, 8

“If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”
Matthew 21:22

…How gracious he will be when you cry for help! As soon as he hears, he will answer you. Isaiah 30:19

…My Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. John 16: 23, 24

And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
John 14:13, 14

When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Matthew 6:6

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Mark 11:24

Pride

Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.
Isaiah 5:21

He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts. What is highly valued among men is de-testable in God’s sight.” Luke 16:15

Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips. Proverbs 27:2

Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and servant to all.” Mark 9:35

God’s Protection

You will laugh at destruction and famine, and need not fear the beasts of the earth. Job 5:22

You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and take your rest in safety. You will lie down, with no one to make you afraid, and many will court your favor. Job 11:18,19

When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Proverbs 3:24

Repentance

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 147:3

If you put away the sin that is in your hand and allow no evil to dwell in your tent, then you will lift up your face without shame; you will stand firm and without fear. Job 11:14,15

Salvation

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” 2 Corinthians 5:17

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21

Seeking God

…The Lord is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you. 2 Chronicles 15:2

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:6

God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. Acts 17:27

Self-Denial

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?” Matthew 16:24-26

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Galatians 5:24

Self-Righteousness

Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.
Isaiah 5:21

Indeed, God does not listen to their empty plea; the Almighty pays no attention to it. Job 35:13

He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts. What is highly valued among men is de-testable in God’s sight.” Luke 16:15

Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips. Proverbs 27:2

Sexual Sins

No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
1 Corinthians 10:13

Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. James 1:12

Sickness

Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise. Jeremiah 17:14

“But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,” declares the Lord.
Jeremiah 30:17

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.
1 Peter 2:24

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53:5

Freedom from Sin

What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Romans 6:1,2

In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Romans 6:11

For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. Romans 6:14

Success

Humility and the fear of the Lord bring wealth and honor and life.
Proverbs 22:4

Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work – this is a gift of God. Ecclesiastes 5:19

Trust

Trust in the Lord and do good with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5,6

So do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?” For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. Matthew 6:31, 32

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever. Psalm 125:1

Wisdom

If any of you, lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. James 1:5

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you. Psalm 32:8

Word of God

…the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:15,16

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17

Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Joshua 1:8

Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it – he will be blessed in what he does. James 1:21-25

Work

But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.
2 Chronicles 15:7

“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.” John 4:34

Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
John 6:28,29

Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:58

Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with you hands…so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody. 2 Thessalonians 3:11,12

God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people…We want each of you to show this diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure. Hebrews 6:10,11

All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.
Proverbs 14:23

Worry

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6,7

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.
2 Corinthians 4:8,9

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever. Isaiah 32:17

Worship

Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.
Psalm 95:6,7
